Job Overview:

Total Grounds is a thriving professional landscape company and is seeking the right candidate to work on fine gardening within our Projects Team. The ideal candidate will have experience in landscaping, specifically in horticulture and fine gardening and can work solo or lead a small team in plantings, pruning and plant cultivation and care.  The position involves specialized care and maintenance of high-end residential gardens and properties, often focusing on aesthetic appeal and attention to detail. The Horticulturist - Fine Gardener will play a vital role in enhancing the beauty, productivity, and sustainability of our natural and cultivated landscapes for our customers through their expertise in plant science and cultivation techniques.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Garden Maintenance: The primary responsibility of a fine gardener is to maintain the appearance and health of gardens to the highest standards. This includes tasks such as planting, pruning, weeding, deadheading flowers, and grooming plants for optimal aesthetic appeal.

  • Seasonal Planting and Design: often involved in seasonal planting and design activities, selecting and arranging plants to create visually stunning displays that evolve throughout the year.

  • Soil Care and Fertilization: Understanding soil health and fertility is essential for maintaining lush, vibrant gardens. Fine gardeners analyze soil conditions, amend soil as needed, and apply appropriate fertilizers to promote plant growth and vigor.

  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM): employ IPM techniques to manage pests and diseases in a sustainable manner, minimizing the use of chemical pesticides. This may involve scouting for pests, identifying beneficial insects, and implementing cultural or biological controls to mitigate pest damage.

  • Pruning and Training: Pruning is an essential aspect of fine gardening, shaping plants for optimal growth and aesthetic appeal. Fine gardeners skillfully prune trees, shrubs, and vines to maintain their natural form, promote flowering, and enhance overall plant health.

  • Specialized Care for Rare and Exotic Plants: Fine gardeners may work with rare, exotic, or delicate plant species that require specialized care and attention. This could include providing protection from harsh weather conditions, implementing microclimate adjustments, or creating custom growing environments to meet the unique needs of these plants.

  • Garden Restoration and Renovation: involved in restoring or renovating existing gardens to improve their overall appearance and functionality. This may involve rejuvenating overgrown landscapes, updating planting schemes, or redesigning garden elements to better complement the surrounding architecture.

  • Execute Planting Plans - collaborate with coworkers on design layouts for softscapes projects and plantings.

Overall, fine gardeners combine technical expertise with artistic vision to create and maintain exquisite outdoor spaces that delight the senses and enhance the beauty of residential properties.
